Quintinha São João

Quintinha São João is a five-star boutique hotel at Rua das Maravilhas 76 in the São Pedro district of Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. The address lies a short distance above the historic centre, so the Sé Cathedral, the Jardim Municipal and the waterfront are reachable by a brief taxi ride or a walk, and the streets nearby are quiet and residential. The building is a restored quinta-style house surrounded by gardens, giving the hotel an intimate, villa-like atmosphere rather than the scale of the big resort hotels on the Lido strip. Rooms are offered as deluxe and premium double or twin rooms, junior suites, superior suites and senior suites, all with air conditioning and a minibar, and the suites provide extra living space and better views over the gardens. Wellness facilities are strong for a small property, with an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a spa and a gym. Food and drink are handled by a restaurant and a bar, with breakfast and evening dining that tends to emphasise Madeiran and Portuguese flavours, including local seafood and island wines. The service character is personal and adult-leaning, closer to a private residence than a large hotel, with staff who can help arrange tours, transfers and restaurant bookings. Rated 4.8 and priced in the upper-middle tier, it appeals to couples, honeymooners and travellers who prefer a quiet base with polished service over a lively resort scene. Beyond the property, Funchal's old town restaurants on Rua de Santa Maria, the cable car to Monte and the Mercado dos Lavradores make good half-day outings, and the hotel's hillside position means that a rental car or taxi helps for beach and coastal trips. Madeira Airport is about a 20 to 25 minute drive depending on traffic, and the hotel can arrange pick-ups on request.
