The Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora do Pico, commonly called the Fortaleza do Pico, stands on a hill above Funchal on Rua do Castelo in the São Pedro district, on the island of Madeira in Portugal. It was built in the 17th century as one of the defensive works that complemented the waterfront forts after the French corsair raid of 1566 exposed the weakness of the island's defences. Its elevated position gave the garrison a wide field of view over the city, the bay and the approaches from the sea, allowing early warning of hostile ships and fire across the town if raiders landed. The fortress is a compact stone structure with strong, sloping walls, a gate, an inner yard and a terrace for artillery, built from the dark local basalt that is characteristic of military and church buildings in Funchal. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Pico, from which the fortress takes its name, is associated with the site. The place retained a military role for generations and was later opened to the public, with the walls and terraces maintained as a heritage viewpoint. It is now one of the best places to understand Funchal's natural amphitheatre layout, with the red-tiled roofs, the harbour, the Sé tower and the Atlantic horizon visible together. Admission is free and opening hours vary, so visitors should check with the Funchal tourism office. The climb from the centre is steep, and many visitors arrive by taxi or by following the road uphill from the São Pedro area before walking down through the old streets. The visit itself is short, usually 20 to 40 minutes, but the views justify planning it for clear weather. Together with the Forte de São Tiago and the Palácio de São Lourenço, the Fortaleza do Pico shows how Funchal was protected on its seaward and upland sides from the 16th to the 18th century.

Why it matters
Perched above Funchal on the Pico hill, the fortress formed part of the island's defensive system against pirate and corsair attack in the 17th century. It gave the garrison command of the city and the bay beneath it.
