Câmara de Lobos Fishing Village Food & Wine Half-Day

This half-day trip covers the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, about 20 minutes west of Funchal and once painted by Winston Churchill for its stacked pastel houses above a working harbour. The roughly five-hour itinerary begins with round-trip transport from Funchal, followed by a walking tour of the harbour and the village's poncha bars, where the traditional muddled sugarcane-spirit drink is sampled alongside the boats that supply the village's catch. Lunch is a wood-fire-grilled fish meal at a village seafood house, typically featuring the day's catch served simply with local vegetables, followed by a stop at a nearby Madeira wine estate for a guided tasting. The route mixes an easy village walk, mostly flat near the harbour with some stepped lanes further up the hillside, with a seated lunch and a seated wine tasting, keeping the physical demands modest. Groups run small to mid-sized, generally under 16 people, with commentary in English covering the village's fishing traditions and its connection to Churchill's visits in the 1950s. Not included are drinks beyond the tastings and lunch pour, or a full dinner. Spring through autumn brings the calmest harbour weather and the best conditions for the coastal walking portions; winter swells can occasionally affect the harbour views.
