Madeira is Portugal's volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, famous for its dramatic mountain peaks, laurel forests, centuries-old levada irrigation channels, and year-round mild climate. The main island rises steeply from the sea to Pico Ruivo at 1,862 metres, creating a landscape of terraced vineyards, sub-tropical gardens, and coastal cliffs that draw hikers, botanists, and cruise passengers alike.

Foodie tips
Get more out of every meal.
Order espetada for two people minimum — the skewer is meant to be shared and arrives hanging from a hook above the table
Ask specifically for 'peixe espada' (black scabbardfish) rather than assuming any white fish will match the island's signature dish
The menu do dia (set lunch) at local restaurants is the best-value way to eat traditional Madeiran food, typically €9–€14 (~$10–$16)
Poncha is stronger than it tastes — the sugarcane spirit is well disguised by the citrus and honey, so pace accordingly
Madeira wine is not only a dessert wine — dry Sercial and Verdelho styles work well as aperitifs and are worth asking for by name
Bolo do caco sold from market stalls is best eaten warm within minutes of being griddled, before the garlic butter cools
