Santana

Santana lies about 45km north of Funchal, reached in 50–60 minutes by car via the VR1 expressway and its series of tunnels through Madeira's mountainous interior, or by SAM intercity bus from Funchal's terminal for those without a rental car. The parish is best known for its palheiros, small triangular A-frame houses with steeply thatched roofs and walls painted red, white and blue, originally built by farming families and now preserved in a cluster near the town centre as an open-air ethnographic display that can be walked through in under an hour. A typical day starts with the drive up in the morning, arriving by mid-morning to explore the palheiro cluster and the small Parque Temático da Madeira theme park nearby, which covers the island's history, flora and traditional architecture in more depth. Around midday, lunch is easily found at one of the small restaurants in the town centre serving grilled meats, fresh fish and local Madeiran specialties like bolo do caco. The early afternoon suits a short toboggan ride — Santana operates one of only four Monte-style wicker toboggan rides on the island, carried down a slope by two runners — followed by a drive or short additional trip to the nearby Queimadas forest park, a laurel-forest picnic area that serves as the trailhead for the well-known Levada do Caldeirão Verde walk. Those without time for a full levada hike can still walk the short paths around Queimadas itself for a sense of the laurisilva forest, a UNESCO-listed habitat found across Madeira's mountains. Santana is visitable year-round, since the palheiros and toboggan ride are largely weather-independent, though spring brings the greenest surrounding hillsides and the clearest views along the VR1 drive. The return trip to Funchal retraces the expressway, making Santana a comfortable full or half-day trip depending on whether the Queimadas forest and levada trailhead are included.
