São Vicente Caves

São Vicente sits on Madeira's north coast, about 55km from Funchal and reached in around an hour by rental car via the VR1 tunnel route, or by Rodoeste or SAM intercity bus with a transfer, a longer option best suited to those without a car. The Grutas de São Vicente, located just outside the village at Sítio das Laranjeiras, are volcanic lava tubes formed roughly 890,000 years ago when flowing lava cooled and hollowed into chambers; a guided walking circuit of around 30 to 40 minutes leads through several of these chambers, and an adjoining Centro do Vulcanismo (volcanism centre) explains the geological processes that shaped Madeira as a whole, with exhibits on volcanic activity and the island's formation. A morning visit to the caves suits most itineraries, since the attraction is indoor and unaffected by weather, leaving the early afternoon free to explore São Vicente village itself — a cluster of whitewashed houses and black-cobbled streets around a parish church, with a small river running through the centre. Lunch is easily found at one of the village's restaurants, several of which serve grilled fish and traditional Madeiran dishes like bolo do caco with garlic butter. For those continuing along the coast, Porto Moniz and its lava pools lie about 30 minutes further west, making São Vicente a natural midpoint stop on a longer north-coast loop, or the return to Funchal can be made directly via the VR1. Because the caves are an indoor attraction, São Vicente is a good year-round option even when weather elsewhere on the island is poor, though a clear day is preferable for photographing the drive itself, which passes through dramatic cliffside tunnels along the north coast.
