Machico

Machico lies about 25km east of Funchal, near FNC Airport, and is reached in 25–30 minutes by SAM intercity bus, taxi or rental car via the VR1. This proximity to the airport makes it a convenient stop on an arrival or departure day, when a full inland excursion is not practical. The town marks the site where explorer João Gonçalves Zarco is said to have first landed on Madeira in 1419, and the compact old town retains this historical layer through the small Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo guarding the harbour entrance and the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição near the main square. A late-morning arrival allows a walk through the old town and along the harbourfront before lunch at one of the seafront restaurants, several of which serve fresh fish and Madeiran specialties overlooking the water. Machico's beach, an imported stretch of golden sand, is one of the few sandy beaches on Madeira's main island, in contrast to the volcanic-pebble coastline found elsewhere, and suits an afternoon swim from roughly May to September when the water is warm enough for comfortable bathing. For those with a rental car, the drive continues easily toward Ponta de São Lourenço at the island's eastern tip, making Machico a natural midpoint on an east-coast itinerary. Because of its short distance from Funchal and the airport, Machico does not require a full day; a half-day covers the old town, harbour and beach comfortably, and the SAM bus runs frequently enough that no advance transport booking is generally needed.
