Ribeira Brava & Rabaçal Levadas

Ribeira Brava lies about 25km west of Funchal, a 30-minute drive along the VR1 expressway, or a similar duration by Rodoeste bus. From there, Rabaçal is a further 20–30 minute drive inland on the winding ER110 mountain road; a rental car is essential for this leg since no regular bus serves the plateau, though a taxi can be arranged from Ribeira Brava. A morning start works best: arriving in Ribeira Brava first allows a short walk through the seafront old town and around the 16th-century São Bento fort and church before the roads inland get busy. From Ribeira Brava, the drive up to Rabaçal climbs steeply through eucalyptus and laurel forest to a small plateau at around 1,000m elevation, the trailhead for several of Madeira's best-known levada walks, including the route to the 25 Fontes waterfalls — a roughly 6km round trip along a flat, well-shaded irrigation-channel path ending at a natural amphitheatre with waterfalls feeding a pool — and the shorter walk to the Risco waterfall. Both paths follow centuries-old levadas, narrow water channels originally built to carry mountain water to Madeira's terraced farms, and involve some sections along narrow ledges with drops, so sturdy footwear and caution are needed. Access to the Rabaçal trailhead itself is restricted by a shuttle service from the ER110 car park at peak times to limit congestion on the narrow access road; checking current access rules before driving up is worthwhile. A packed lunch or the small kiosk at the Rabaçal car park suits those doing the full walk, while a sit-down lunch back in Ribeira Brava works well for a shorter itinerary. The best hiking conditions are found from March to June and September to November, when trails are drier and temperatures milder than midsummer; heavy winter rain can make the levada paths slippery and is best avoided. The return drive to Funchal from Rabaçal takes around an hour combined, making this a full-day trip when the levada walk is included.
