Câmara de Lobos

Câmara de Lobos lies about 10km west of Funchal, a quick 15–20 minute trip by Horários do Funchal municipal bus, taxi or short drive, making it one of the easiest half-day trips from the capital. The village centres on a working fishing harbour where brightly painted wooden boats are drawn up on the shingle beach, largely unchanged from the scene Winston Churchill painted here during a 1950 visit, commemorated with a small plaque near the harbour. A late-morning arrival allows time to walk the harbourfront and old town streets before lunch at one of the village's restaurants, several of which specialise in espada (black scabbardfish), a local Madeiran staple often served grilled with banana. After lunch, the short additional drive or taxi ride to Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs at around 580 metres, is the natural continuation of the trip; a glass-floor skywalk there extends out over the cliff edge for a direct view down to the ocean and the small terraced vegetable plots (poios) clinging to the cliff face below, a distinctive feature of Madeira's traditional agriculture. Because both stops are close to Funchal and quick to reach, Câmara de Lobos works equally well as a standalone half-day trip or as the first stop on a longer south-coast itinerary continuing toward Ribeira Brava. The village and cliff viewpoint are visitable year-round, with clear afternoons generally offering the best visibility from the Cabo Girão skywalk. Given the short travel time, no advance transport booking is generally needed, and the municipal bus runs frequently enough for a flexible, unhurried visit.
