Praia do Pego

Praia do Pego is one of the signature beaches of the Comporta stretch of the Alentejo coast, reached by crossing a long wooden boardwalk that winds through umbrella pine forest and stabilized dunes before opening onto a wide expanse of fine, pale sand. The Atlantic water here is typically clear but cool, with moderate surf and a noticeable undertow on windier days, so swimmers should stay within the flagged and lifeguard-patrolled zone during the June-to-September season. The beach is broad and open, backed by a continuous line of dunes and pine woodland rather than cliffs, giving it good shelter from the prevailing northerly wind compared with more exposed stretches further south. Praia do Pego draws a mixed crowd: families with young children tend to settle near the boardwalk access point and lifeguard post, while surfers and bodyboarders work the beach breaks further along, and sunbathers spread out along the dune line for a quieter, more low-key alternative to the Algarve's busier resorts. A single beach bar near the main access point serves drinks, snacks, and simple grilled fish, and there are basic showers and toilets, but no permanent restaurant or supermarket on site, so visitors bringing a full day's supplies should stock up in Comporta village beforehand. Parking is informal and limited to a sandy area near the boardwalk entrance, filling by mid-morning in peak season; there is no train or public bus service to the beach, so a car (or bicycle from Comporta, roughly 8km away) is the only realistic way to arrive. The long boardwalk sets the beach back from the road, which keeps noise and crowding down even in August but also means a slower arrival and departure for anyone loaded with beach gear. Photographers favor the golden hour, when the umbrella pines and dune grasses catch the low light, and the beach is at its most tranquil in the early morning before the day-trip crowds from Lisbon and the Algarve arrive.
