Praia da Comporta

Praia da Comporta stretches along a wide, gently curving bay just west of Comporta village, one of the best-known beaches of Portugal's Alentejo coast and a longtime magnet for Lisbon weekenders and an international beach-club crowd. The sand is fine, pale, and generous in width, backed by low dunes and umbrella pines rather than cliffs, and the Atlantic water is clear but noticeably cooler than the Algarve, with a moderate swell that builds through the afternoon. The beach is fully open to the ocean, offering little shelter from wind on blustery days, which keeps kite and windsurfers active even when sunbathers retreat behind windbreaks. Praia da Comporta has a more developed, fashionable feel than most Alentejo beaches: a cluster of beach restaurants and design-conscious beach clubs line the access road, serving grilled fish, seafood rice, and cocktails through the afternoon and into sunset, and sunbed and umbrella rental is available directly on the sand in season. Families gather near the main access points where the beach flattens out and lifeguards patrol between June and September, while a younger, fashion-forward crowd tends to cluster around the beach clubs further along. Parking is available in a sandy lot behind the dunes, but it fills early on August weekends, and the narrow access road into Comporta can back up with traffic at peak times. There is no train service, and bus connections from Lisbon or Setúbal require a change and a taxi for the final stretch, so most visitors arrive by car. The beach's relative remoteness, roughly 95km south of Lisbon along small roads, has helped it retain a quieter, more low-key character than the Algarve despite its popularity, though this has been changing as the area's profile has grown. Sunset is a particularly good time to visit, both for photography over the dunes and for the golden light on the beach restaurants' terraces.
