Praia do Carvalhal

Praia do Carvalhal lies about 15km south of Comporta village, a quieter and less developed stretch of the same long, dune-backed coastline. The sand is fine and pale, running in a broad, largely open beach with low dunes and scattered pine cover behind it, offering only partial shelter from wind. The Atlantic surf here tends to be a touch stronger than at the busier Comporta beaches closer to the village, drawing local surfers and bodyboarders rather than the beach-club crowd, and the water is clear but cool year-round. A wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes to the sand, and a small seasonal beach bar operates in the busiest summer months, but there are no restaurants, shops, or permanent facilities nearby, so visitors typically pack their own food and drink. Parking is limited and informal, set back from the dunes in a cleared sandy area that can fill on midsummer weekends but rarely reaches the congestion seen further north. The relative lack of development is the beach's main draw: travellers who find Praia da Comporta too busy or too polished often head here instead for a wider stretch of open sand with far fewer people, particularly on weekdays and outside July and August. There is no public transport to the beach, so a car is effectively required, and the final approach road is unpaved in sections. Because the beach faces open ocean with no headland shelter, conditions can change quickly with the wind, and swimmers should pay attention to the state of the surf before entering the water, especially as there is no year-round lifeguard presence. The surrounding pine and scrubland is part of the wider protected coastal landscape south of Comporta, and walkers sometimes continue along informal dune paths rather than the main boardwalk for a more solitary approach to the beach.
