Gamboa Rainforest Resort

Gamboa Rainforest Resort sits on a 340-acre property at the confluence of the Chagres River and the Panama Canal, approximately 40 kilometres north of Panama City on the boundary of Soberania National Park. The drive from the city takes around 45 minutes, passing through the former Canal Zone town of Gamboa — a settlement of wooden colonial-era houses originally built to house Canal workers. The resort's position on this stretch of the waterway means guests watch Panamax container ships pass through primary rainforest at close range, one of the most distinctive views available from any hotel in the Americas.

The main lodge building and guest bungalows sit among established tropical forest. Howler monkeys, toucans, sloths, and over 500 bird species have been recorded on the property and in the surrounding park, making the resort a recognised base for serious birdwatchers and naturalists. Rooms and suites in the principal building are furnished with comfortable beds and air conditioning; many units overlook the Chagres River or the forest canopy. A cluster of historic Gamboa town houses is available as self-contained apartment accommodation.

Dining is centred in Restaurante Dos Continentes, which overlooks the river and serves international and Panamanian dishes. A poolside bar serves lighter fare through the afternoon. Two pools — including an infinity-edge pool facing the river — anchor the leisure facilities, alongside a full-service spa offering massage treatments, body therapies, and steam rooms.

An aerial tram transects the forest canopy for wildlife observation. Guided boat tours on the Chagres River, sport fishing, kayaking, night wildlife walks, and canal observation are available through the activities desk, which also coordinates transfers to Panama City.
