Sukkur, the Barrage, and Sadhu Bela

Sukkur, about 470 km from Karachi and 305 km from Hyderabad, is best treated as an overnight trip given the roughly 7-8.5 hour overnight train journey from Karachi Cantt, though a domestic flight to Sukkur Airport (SKZ) cuts the travel time to about 1-1.5 hours for those with less time. The city sits on the Indus River beside the Sukkur Barrage, a major early-20th-century irrigation structure completed in 1932 that transformed agriculture across Sindh by controlling the Indus for the surrounding canal network, and remains an impressive feat of colonial-era engineering to walk across on foot. A short boat ride from the riverbank reaches Sadhu Bela, a small island temple complex sacred to Hindu pilgrims, its white-domed shrines rising directly from the Indus and offering a striking contrast to the barrage's industrial scale nearby. The old city's bazaars near the Clock Tower area sell Sindhi ajrak textiles and handicrafts, and Sukkur's riverside setting offers pleasant early-morning and evening views across the Indus. An overnight visit allows a full day to see the barrage, take the boat to Sadhu Bela, and browse the old city bazaars without the fatigue of the very long round-trip distance from Karachi; a rushed single-day visit is possible only by flying both ways. Interior Sindh, including Sukkur and nearby Jacobabad, records some of the highest temperatures anywhere in the world during summer, making the November-February window essential rather than merely preferable for a comfortable visit.
