Mohenjo-daro Archaeological Site

Mohenjo-daro, one of the best-preserved cities of the Indus Valley Civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies in Larkana District, about 425 km from Karachi and roughly 100 km from Sukkur, and is realistically an overnight trip rather than a same-day outing from either city given the distances involved. Built around 2500 BCE and rediscovered in the 1920s, the site preserves an extraordinarily sophisticated urban layout, including a grid street plan, sophisticated brick drainage and sewage systems well ahead of their time, the raised Great Bath ceremonial structure, and the remains of a citadel mound overlooking the lower city; a well-curated on-site museum displays seals, pottery, tools, and the famous small bronze 'Dancing Girl' figurine (a replica, as the original is held in New Delhi). The most practical approach is to fly or take an overnight train from Karachi to Sukkur, then continue by hired car through Larkana to the site, which takes roughly 3-4 hours from Sukkur; travelers driving the full distance from Karachi should plan an overnight stay along the way rather than attempting the round trip in one day. A visit typically takes a half-day to properly explore both the excavated ruins and the museum, best done in the cooler morning hours before the site's exposed brick ruins become uncomfortably hot. Basic food stalls operate near the site entrance, though a fuller meal is best planned in Larkana or Sukkur. The November-February window is close to essential rather than simply preferable, since interior Sindh's summer heat, among the most extreme recorded anywhere, makes walking the open excavation genuinely dangerous.
