Kallar Kahar Lake

Kallar Kahar Lake sits in a natural depression of the Salt Range in Chakwal District, Punjab, ringed by low, scrub-covered hills and, on its northern side, a small peacock sanctuary that gives the town part of its charm. The lake is fed by underground springs and rainfall runoff, which leaves the water mineral-rich and distinctly saline; the shoreline is a firm mix of packed earth and rocky patches rather than sand, and the water itself carries a greenish-brown tint rather than the clear turquoise of a coastal beach. At roughly 8 km in circumference but only 4-5 feet at its deepest, the lake is shallow and calm, with almost no wave action, so it reads more as a still, open expanse than a beach with surf or shape. There is no swimming here, since the salinity and unclear bottom make bathing unappealing and it is not managed as a swim site; the appeal instead is boating, walking the shore, and photographing the hills reflected in the water. The atmosphere is heavily family- and picnic-oriented, especially on weekends and public holidays when groups from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore arrive for the day; it is not a party destination and there is no nightlife. Amenities are basic but functional: rowboats, pedal boats, and motorboats can be hired by the shore, several food stalls and small restaurants sell tea, snacks, and simple meals nearby, and there is open parking near the main boating point, though restroom facilities are limited and not consistently maintained. There are no lifeguards on duty, so visitors who do wade in do so at their own judgment. Access is straightforward: the lake sits just off the M2 Motorway at the Kallar Kahar interchange, roughly 190 km from Lahore and under 1.5 hours from Islamabad or Rawalpindi by private car, with the town's main road running directly past the shoreline, making a stop here an easy add-on to a Salt Range road trip rather than a destination requiring a long walk or ferry.
