Head Marala

Head Marala, also known as Marala Headworks, sits on the Chenab River just outside Sialkot city in Punjab, where a barrage and an adjoining unprotected wetland together form one of the region's more important sites for both local recreation and migratory bird habitat. The riverbank is a mix of firm mud, gravel, and reed-lined wetland edges rather than sand, and the Chenab's water here is a cloudy grey-brown, typical of a large glacier-fed river carrying sediment; the wetland spreads out into shallow, reed-choked pools that shift in extent with the season, giving the site an open, sprawling shape rather than the enclosed feel of a cove. Currents near the barrage gates can be strong when releases are high, so the site functions as a picnic, boating, and birdwatching destination rather than a swimming beach. Between November and February the wetland becomes a wintering ground for migratory waterfowl, including bar-headed geese, greylag geese, and shelducks, drawing birdwatchers alongside the usual family picnic crowd; on clear days after rain, the Pir Panjal foothills are sometimes visible in the distance. The atmosphere is quiet and family-friendly rather than a party scene, with no nightlife on site. Facilities are modest: designated picnic areas along the bank, boating available in allocated sections away from the main channel, a few scenic viewpoints over the barrage, and open parking, but there are no lifeguards, no formal food vendors on site, and restroom facilities are limited. Access is straightforward from Sialkot city, a short drive by private car or hired driver directly to the headworks, roughly 250 km from Lahore in total; there is no public transit route to the site itself, so a car is the practical way to reach it.
