Serena Shigar Fort

Serena Shigar Fort occupies a restored seventeenth-century fortress in Shigar Valley, approximately 30 km northeast of Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, at an elevation of roughly 2,500 m. The property sits alongside the Shigar River, surrounded by centuries-old orchard terraces and the granite peaks of the Karakoram range. K2 base camp trek routes and the Baltoro Glacier approach road both pass through the Shigar Valley, placing the fort at a natural staging point for expeditions to some of the world's most demanding high-altitude terrain.

The fort served as the residence of the Rajas of Shigar until a restoration programme led by the Aga Khan Cultural Service in the 1990s converted it into a heritage hotel while preserving the original fabric: hand-carved wooden screens and balconies, a traditional inner courtyard, painted ceilings, and dressed stonework. The conservation project is widely referenced as a model for heritage tourism development in mountain South Asia.

Accommodation comprises individually named rooms and suites, each fitted with traditional wooden furniture crafted by local artisans, handwoven rugs, copper bathroom fixtures, and locally produced textiles. Room count is deliberately limited to maintain an intimate character. Modern comforts including hot water, electric heating, and Wi-Fi are integrated without disrupting the period aesthetic.

The on-site restaurant serves Balti and Pakistani cuisine alongside continental options, drawing most ingredients from the fort's organic kitchen garden and surrounding orchards. Meals on the outdoor terrace during summer overlook the valley peaks. Cultural programmes — traditional music evenings, craft demonstrations, and guided village walks — are organised for guests by the property.

Staff have extensive experience supporting expedition logistics and assist with porters, guides, and transport for Concordia, Trango Towers, and Baltoro treks.
