Tarkwa Bay Beach

Tarkwa Bay Beach sits on a small sand spit at the mouth of Lagos Harbour, reachable only by boat, which keeps it noticeably calmer and cleaner than Lagos's mainland-connected beaches. The sand is light and fine, and because the bay is sheltered behind the harbour breakwater, the water is unusually flat and clear for the Lagos coastline, making it one of the few spots in the city genuinely suited to relaxed swimming rather than bodysurfing. The beach itself is a narrow, curving strip rather than a long open shore, with the harbour channel and passing tankers visible in the near distance, a reminder that this is a working port as much as a leisure spot. The vibe leans toward laid-back day-tripping: small groups of friends and families rent wooden cabanas or beach shacks for shade, rather than the club-and-DJ scene found at Elegushi or Landmark. Amenities are basic but sufficient, with informal vendors selling grilled fish, suya, and cold drinks, plus rentable loungers and beach shacks; there are no permanent restrooms or lifeguard towers, so visitors should not expect resort-level infrastructure. Because there is no road access, every visitor arrives the same way, by wooden speedboat from the CMS, Marina, Falomo, or Victoria Island jetties, a crossing of roughly fifteen to thirty minutes across Lagos Harbour. This shared arrival experience, along with the sea breeze and open horizon toward the Atlantic, gives Tarkwa Bay a distinct island-getaway feel despite being only a few kilometres from Lagos Island. The Harmattan dry season from November to March brings the calmest water and clearest skies, and is generally considered the best window for a day trip.
