Alpha Beach

Alpha Beach is a working-class stretch of dark, coarse sand off the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Igbo-Efon, and offers a far less commercialised alternative to the resort-style beaches closer to Victoria Island. The shoreline is open to the Atlantic, with noticeable surf and undertow, and the beach is broad but relatively undeveloped, lined with simple wooden shacks and canopies rather than branded beach clubs. The atmosphere is local and community-driven, with groups from nearby neighbourhoods gathering for informal games of football and volleyball on the sand, and families and friends grilling food or relaxing under rented canopies rather than paying for lounge service. Amenities are minimal: a handful of food vendors sell grilled fish, corn, and drinks, but there are no formal restrooms, lifeguard towers, or organised water sports operators. Access is notable for arriving mostly by motorcycle taxi, or okada, directly off the expressway, since the beach sits close to the road without the long private driveways found at gated beaches nearby. This makes Alpha Beach quick to reach for those already travelling the Lekki-Epe corridor, roughly twenty kilometres from Lagos Island, though the drive itself can run thirty-five to fifty minutes depending on traffic. The unfiltered, low-cost character of the beach appeals to visitors looking for an authentic local scene rather than a curated resort day, but it also means swimmers should be more cautious, as there is no lifeguard presence and the surf can be strong. The dry season from November to March brings calmer water and is the more comfortable time to visit.
