Elegushi Beach

Elegushi Beach is a wide, open stretch of golden-brown sand facing the Atlantic Ocean in Ikate, Lekki, and is one of Lagos's most popular weekend destinations for a lively, social beach day rather than a quiet swim. The shoreline is exposed to the open ocean, so surf and undertow can be moderate to strong, and the beach is broader and flatter than the coves further along the coast, giving it room for large gatherings, volleyball courts, and horseback riding along the sand. The dominant atmosphere is upbeat and youthful, with clusters of beach clubs and lounges playing music, serving food and cocktails, and renting out shaded seating areas, alongside jet ski operators running rides just offshore; it draws a mixed crowd of young professionals, families on outings, and groups celebrating birthdays or corporate events. Amenities are concentrated around the paid club sections, which typically include loungers, umbrellas, changing areas, and food and drink service, while the open public stretch has fewer facilities and more informal vendors. Parking is available on site, though it fills quickly on weekends and public holidays, and the roughly eighteen-kilometre drive from Lagos Island along the Lekki-Epe Expressway can take thirty to forty-five minutes or considerably longer in Lagos traffic. There is no lifeguard service across the entire beach, so swimmers should stay close to shore and heed advice from beach staff about current conditions on a given day. The dry season from November to March brings calmer seas and more consistent weather, making it the preferred window for both swimming and outdoor events.
