Campement Tagmart sits on the outskirts of Agadez — historically the most important caravan staging post of the central Sahara and a UNESCO World Heritage city — placing guests at the edge of the Ténéré desert without the cost of a formal hotel. Accommodation consists of either canvas dome tents on wooden platforms or small mud-brick rooms built in the traditional Hausa-Sudano style, with thick earthen walls doing much of the work of keeping interiors tolerable through the midday heat. Facilities are deliberately basic: shared pit-latrine toilets, bucket-shower stations filled from the camp well, and no mechanical air conditioning. Meals are communal, served on woven mats under a reed-frond shelter after dark; the standard fare is rice or couscous with a vegetable stew supplemented by flatbread baked directly on the coals. The camp's staff includes Tuareg desert guides who can arrange camel treks ranging from a two-hour dune excursion to multi-day expeditions into the Ténéré or toward the granite peaks of the Aïr Mountains. Because the camp hosts a small number of guests at any time, guides can adapt itineraries individually. Night skies above the camp are exceptionally clear — light pollution from Agadez is minimal at this distance — making it a strong base for Saharan astronomy or low-light photography. The camp operates year-round but visitor numbers concentrate sharply in the cooler months from October through February, when the camp fills with trekkers, overland cyclists crossing the Sahara, and travellers drawn by the TransSaharienne route through Niger.
