Day trip from Gandaki, Gandaki
Jomsom and Lower Mustang Day Trip by Flight
A unique day trip option using the spectacular Pokhara-Jomsom flight to experience the stark, dramatic landscape of the Kali Gandaki valley and lower Mustang. From Jomsom, a short walk or jeep ride reaches Marpha (the 'Apple Capital of Nepal') and the lower reaches of the Mustang valley. Return on the afternoon flight. This gives a taste of Mustang without the significant expense of the restricted area permit required for Upper Mustang.
How to get there
- {'type': 'Flight (Tara Air / Summit Air)', 'cost': 'NPR 12,000-16,000 one way; NPR 24,000-32,000 return', 'notes': 'Morning flights only. Book well in advance.'}
Highlights
- Dramatic aerial views of the Kali Gandaki gorge and Dhaulagiri
- Jomsom Bazaar - gateway to Mustang
- Marpha village - stone-paved streets, apple orchards, apple brandy
- Muktinath Temple (3,800m) - sacred to Hindus and Buddhists (jeep required, 30 min from Jomsom)
- Kagbeni - medieval village at the entrance to Upper Mustang
Tips
- CRITICAL: Book the MORNING return flight. Afternoon winds in the Kali Gandaki valley frequently ground aircraft.
- Muktinath requires a jeep from Jomsom (1 hour, NPR 3,000-4,000 return) - plan carefully within the day.
- Carry warm clothing - Jomsom is significantly colder than Pokhara.
- This is also the entry point for multi-day Upper Mustang treks - an overnight is highly recommended to justify the flight cost.
