Gorkha Day Trip

Easy (short steep climb to palace)

The historic birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of Nepal, Gorkha town sits 2-2.5 hours east of Pokhara on the Prithvi Highway. The hilltop Gorkha Durbar palace-fortress is one of Nepal's most important historic sites, perched above the valley with panoramic views of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu (8,163m), and Himalchuli. The inner Kalika Temple is one of Nepal's most powerful Shaktipeeths. A full day is needed to do the visit justice.

Tips

  • Start early from Pokhara to allow time for the 30-45 minute climb to the palace.
  • Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner Kalika Temple sanctum.
  • Combine with Manakamana cable car (en route) for a full day.
  • Gorkha is famous for its handmade khukuri (Gurkha knives) - authentic ones are sold in the bazaar.
