Top 10 Day Trips
The best excursions from Gandaki.
Gorkha Day Trip
The historic birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of Nepal, Gorkha town sits 2-2.5 hours east of Pokhara on the Prithvi Highway. The hilltop Gorkha Durbar palace-fortress is one of Nepal's most important historic sites, perched above the valley with panoramic views of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu (8,163m), and Himalchuli. The inner Kalika Temple is one of Nepal's most powerful Shaktipeeths. A full day is needed to do the visit justice.
Manakamana Temple Cable Car
One of Nepal's most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites, the Manakamana Temple sits at 1,302 meters in the Gorkha District and is reached by South Asia's first cable car - a spectacular 10-minute aerial crossing of the Trishuli River gorge. Pilgrims believe the wish-fulfilling goddess Manakamana (an incarnation of Parvati) grants sincere prayers. The temple complex is always lively with worshippers, vendors, and the unique atmosphere of active Hindu devotion.
Begnas and Rupa Lakes
Two pristine lakes 15-18km southeast of Pokhara, offering a tranquil alternative to the busier Phewa Lake. Begnas Tal (the larger) is surrounded by forested hills with views of Manaslu and the Annapurna range, while the smaller Rupa Tal is connected by a narrow channel. Both lakes are excellent for birdwatching (over 200 species recorded), freshwater fishing, and quiet rowboat exploration. The lakeside villages retain a genuinely local character.
Sarangkot Sunrise + Paragliding
The most popular half-day excursion from Pokhara. Drive or hike to Sarangkot (1,592m) before dawn for the sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, then ride a tandem paraglider back down to Lakeside with a bird's-eye view of Phewa Lake. The full experience - departure in darkness, arriving at the viewpoint as the sky turns pink and gold, then the exhilaration of a 20-30 minute paraglide over the lake - is one of Nepal's great travel experiences.
Bandipur Heritage Town
A perfectly preserved Newari hill town frozen in the 17th-19th century, Bandipur sits at 1,030 meters on a ridge with sweeping views of the Marsyangdi valley and Himalayan peaks. The car-free central bazaar is lined with immaculately maintained three and four-storey traditional brick buildings with elaborately carved wooden windows and balconies. Far less visited than tourist hotspots, Bandipur offers an authentic slice of classical Newar culture and architecture.
Jomsom and Lower Mustang Day Trip by Flight
A unique day trip option using the spectacular Pokhara-Jomsom flight to experience the stark, dramatic landscape of the Kali Gandaki valley and lower Mustang. From Jomsom, a short walk or jeep ride reaches Marpha (the 'Apple Capital of Nepal') and the lower reaches of the Mustang valley. Return on the afternoon flight. This gives a taste of Mustang without the significant expense of the restricted area permit required for Upper Mustang.
Pokhara City Highlights Half-Day
A self-guided or guided half-day circuit covering Pokhara's most iconic attractions: Davis Falls, Gupteshwor Cave, the Tibetan Refugee Camp, and the World Peace Pagoda. All four sites are accessible by taxi or auto-rickshaw within a 3-hour window. The afternoon can then be spent at leisure on Phewa Lake or in Lakeside.
