Day trip from Gandaki, Gandaki

Begnas and Rupa Lakes

Easy

Two pristine lakes 15-18km southeast of Pokhara, offering a tranquil alternative to the busier Phewa Lake. Begnas Tal (the larger) is surrounded by forested hills with views of Manaslu and the Annapurna range, while the smaller Rupa Tal is connected by a narrow channel. Both lakes are excellent for birdwatching (over 200 species recorded), freshwater fishing, and quiet rowboat exploration. The lakeside villages retain a genuinely local character.

How to get there

  • {'type': 'Local bus from Pokhara bus stand', 'cost': 'NPR 40-60', 'notes': 'Frequent departures from Mahendra Pool bus stand.'}
  • {'type': 'Taxi from Lakeside', 'cost': 'NPR 500-700 one way', 'notes': 'Easy and affordable.'}
  • {'type': 'Motorbike', 'cost': 'NPR 800-1,200/day rental', 'notes': 'Excellent route for an independent motorbike day out.'}

Highlights

  • Rowing on Begnas Lake with Himalayan mountain views
  • Birdwatching - 200+ species including kingfishers, herons, eagles
  • Fresh fish lunch at lakeside teahouses
  • Rupa Lake - even quieter and more remote feel
  • Begnas Hill hike (1,006m) for panoramic valley views

Tips

  • Far fewer tourists than Phewa Lake - a much more local experience.
  • Hire a local boatman who can point out birds and fishing spots.
  • The teahouses near the boat launch serve fresh catch-of-the-day fish.
  • Cycling from Pokhara to Begnas Lake (15km) is a popular half-day option.
