Ifrane is a planned mountain town in the Middle Atlas of Morocco's Fès-Meknès region, founded under the French protectorate in the 1930s and designed in an Alpine style, with steep red-tiled roofs, timber-trimmed chalets, tree-lined avenues and manicured parks. At an altitude of around 1,650 metres, it is noticeably cooler than the lowlands and is often called the Switzerland of Morocco.

The Stone Lion, a carved statue of an Atlas lion set in a park near the town centre, is the town's best-known landmark. The frame typically places the lion in the foreground with the chalets and trees behind, and a wider composition includes lawns and the nearby stream. Morning light is soft and clear and is the most pleasant time for photographing the lion without crowds. Winter brings snow, which transforms the chalets and lion into an Alpine scene, and the best snow images appear after a fresh fall and before foot traffic marks the ground. Autumn adds yellow and orange foliage. The lion is in public space, so no entrance fee applies, and it is a popular stop for domestic and international visitors, with queues for photographs building at weekends and on holidays. A tripod is rarely necessary in daylight, and visitors should avoid blocking the footpaths. Drones require authorisation in Morocco and are unsuitable in the town. Cafés and restaurants near the centre provide restrooms and water. The lion site is flat and easily reachable, with paved paths. Winter driving conditions can be slippery, and visitors should check road and weather reports before travelling from Fès.
