Dayet Aoua is a natural freshwater lake in Ifrane Province, in the Middle Atlas of Morocco's Fès-Meknès region, around 17 kilometres from the town of Ifrane at an altitude of about 1,500 metres. It is surrounded by grassland, reeds and low hills, and it is recognised as a wetland of importance for migratory and resident waterbirds. The frame is a broad, calm lake surface reflecting the sky and the surrounding hills, with reed beds and birds in the foreground, and sunrise light gives the most atmospheric conditions when the water is still and the colours are soft. Telephoto lenses allow photographers to isolate waterbirds such as herons, ducks and grebes, while a polarising filter reduces glare and deepens reflections. The lake's water level varies widely with rainfall and snowmelt, and the best season is winter to spring, when the lake is fuller and the surrounding landscape is greener; in dry summers the water can shrink dramatically and leave cracked mud. The area is open and quiet, with few visitors apart from local picnickers at weekends and spring holidays, so finding a position on the shore is easy. No entrance fee is charged at the lake itself. Tripods are unrestricted on the shore, but drones require authorisation in Morocco and are likely to disturb birds. Binoculars help with spotting wildlife. There are few facilities near the water, so visitors should bring water and snacks and use restrooms in Ifrane beforehand. The shore is reached by a flat track, and mornings can be very cold, particularly in winter.
