Cueva de las Sardinas Ciegas at Parque Villa Luz

Parque Villa Luz, a state park in the forested hills near Tapijulapa in the Tacotalpa municipality of Tabasco, protects a sulfur-spring cave known as the Cueva de las Sardinas Ciegas, home to a colony of small blind fish that live in the milky, mineral-rich water flowing from inside the rock. The cave mouth itself is dim, calling for a fast lens of f/2.8 or wider and a high-ISO-capable body rather than flash, which disturbs the fish and is discouraged by park staff. Below the cave, the sulfurous outflow spreads into a series of shaded forest pools with a distinctive turquoise-white tint from dissolved minerals, photographed well with a wide-angle to include the surrounding jungle canopy. Because the pools sit under heavy tree cover for most of the day, the window between about 10:00 and 13:00, when the sun is high enough to penetrate the canopy gaps, gives the clearest light on both the cave mouth and the pools without deep pockets of shadow. The park opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00, with admission about 30 MXN (approx USD 2), and November through April brings more consistent spring flow and drier forest trails, while the rainy season from June to October can raise water levels and muddy the approach paths; a waterproof bag is worth carrying regardless of season, since the trail crosses several stream sections. The site draws a mix of local and domestic visitors, particularly around the Semana Santa fish festival held at the cave, and photographing the interior is generally easiest on quieter weekday mornings.
