Tabasco is a low, green, water-soaked state on Mexico's southern Gulf coast, cut through by the Grijalva and Usumacinta rivers, the two largest river systems in the country. Its capital, Villahermosa, holds Parque-Museo La Venta, an open-air jungle park where colossal Olmec stone heads sit among free-roaming toucans and howler monkeys. Inland, Comalcalco is the only major Maya city built almost entirely of fired brick rather than stone, a legacy of the region's cacao-growing floodplain. Tabasco receives far fewer visitors than the Yucatan Peninsula next door, making it a genuinely uncrowded base for Olmec and Maya archaeology, river travel, and cacao culture.

Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Book Hotel Villa Luz in Tapijulapa well ahead of a weekend visit, since Sierra lodging near Parque Villa Luz is limited and fills quickly
Stay in Zona Luz for walking access to the Malecón, the cathedral and Mercado Pino Suárez; choose Tabasco 2000 for proximity to Parque-Museo La Venta and the Laguna de las Ilusiones
Comalcalco's Hacienda Cholula Boutique Cacao Hotel is worth booking directly by phone, since walk-up rates there often beat online listings
Villahermosa hotel prices rise around Mexican school holidays in July-August and around Christmas and Semana Santa; book the Hyatt Regency or Hilton several weeks ahead for those dates
Budget hotels in Zona Luz such as Hotel Manzur and Hotel Madan rarely take online reservations far in advance, so a same-day phone call or walk-in often works
