Yumka Savanna at Dawn

Yumka, a wildlife reserve and environmental education park on the eastern edge of Villahermosa, capital of Tabasco, combines a walk-through jungle trail of native regional flora and fauna with an open African-savanna section where giraffes, rhinos, zebras and antelope roam in a large enclosed grassland, viewed from a safari-style tram or a fenced perimeter walking path. Because the savanna gates open at 09:00, the most productive plan is to walk the shaded jungle trail first for lowland Tabasco wildlife and lagoon views, then move to the savanna at opening time, when animals are most active before the heat of the day sets in and the still-low morning sun gives soft, directional light across the open grass; a 70-200mm or longer telephoto is essential for the savanna animals, which are viewed at some distance for safety, while a wide-angle suits the jungle trail and its lagoon stretches. A polariser helps cut glare on the open grassland under the rising sun. Combined admission covering both the jungle trail and the savanna circuit costs about 90 MXN (approx USD 5). November through April offers the clearest air and least midday heat haze for savanna photography, while the wet season from June to October brings more humid, hazier conditions and occasional trail closures after heavy rain. The park draws a steady flow of school groups and local families, particularly on weekends, so a weekday morning visit generally gives more space along the savanna's viewing path.
