Barrio de los Alfareros is Metepec's historic potters' quarter, centered on Calle Progreso and the streets around it, in Mexico State. Unlike a formal market hall, goods here are sold straight from the multi-generation family workshops where they are made, so almost everything on display is authentic, artisan-produced clayware rather than resold tourist trinkets; the trade-off is that hours and stock vary by household rather than following a single schedule. Workshops shape, glaze, and paint pottery on site, including Árbol de la Vida sculptures, cazuelas, planters, and everyday tableware, and visitors can often watch pieces being formed on the wheel or painted by hand. Prices are generally set per family, and modest bargaining is more common here than in the formal exhibition center, particularly for larger orders; cash is strongly preferred since most household workshops have no card terminal. There is no organized tax-refund process at this scale of vendor. The neighborhood is laid out as a loose grid of home workshops rather than market stalls, so the must-visit corners are really the cluster of long-established family names along and just off Calle Progreso, where quality and reputation are most consistent. The atmosphere is quiet and residential compared with the busier Árbol de la Vida exhibition center, with little in the way of on-site food beyond the occasional corner stand, making it a stop best paired with a meal elsewhere in Metepec.
