Miguel Colorado Cenote Overlook

Timber viewing platforms on the rim of the Azul cenote at Miguel Colorado, near Champoton in southern Campeche, look sixty metres down onto green water enclosed by vertical limestone walls hung with roots and vines, with a zipline cable crossing the void adding scale and a graphic subject to the frame. From the lower water platform, the reverse view looking up the walls is equally strong, and a waterproof housing or action camera is useful for anyone photographing from the kayak or swim level. Direct sunlight reaches the pool itself only around midday, roughly 11:30 to 13:30, which is when the water shows its clearest turquoise colour; earlier or later the cenote sits in deep shade, requiring exposure bracketing to hold detail in both the bright rim and the dark interior. A polariser cuts surface reflection to reveal the water's colour, while a neutral-density filter allows longer exposures from the rim platforms. The ejido cooperative operates the site daily from 08:00 to 17:00 on a cash-only basis, and November through April is the recommended season, though the cenote is open and photographable year round. Visitor numbers are modest and vary with zipline bookings, so rim platform space is generally available; a strap and tether for cameras are strongly advised, since dropped gear falling into the cenote is unrecoverable.
