Isla Aguada Lighthouse and Dolphins

The striped lighthouse beside the municipal pier is the visual landmark of Isla Aguada, at the mouth of the Laguna de Terminos in southern Campeche, and it works both as a direct subject and as a silhouetted foreground for sunsets over the lagoon mouth. Bottlenose dolphins work the same channel and are photographed from cooperative lanchas that operate between 08:00 and 16:30, requiring a 100-400mm zoom and a fast shutter of 1/2000s or faster to freeze surfacing frames from a moving boat. Boats are hired whole at about 1,600-2,200 MXN (approx USD 94-129) for up to six people, and the same trip typically calls at Isla de los Pajaros, where frigatebirds and cormorants nest in the mangrove, adding a second wildlife subject to the outing. Morning departures from 07:00 to 09:00 give the calmest water and the most active dolphins before wind picks up over the lagoon; the lighthouse itself is better photographed at sunset, when it stands in silhouette against the western sky. November through May is the calmest season for the lagoon, while the June to October rainy season brings choppier water that can shorten or cancel boat trips. A dry bag and lens cloth are essential against spray on the open lancha, and a polariser helps cut surface glare when trying to see dolphins beneath the water.
