Balamku Stucco Frieze Chamber

A roofed chamber at Balamku protects a seventeen-metre painted stucco frieze depicting jaguars, toads and crocodiles emerging from the jaws of the earth, one of the best-preserved examples of modelled Maya plaster art anywhere in the Yucatan peninsula. The chamber itself is dim, cramped and unlit, and flash is prohibited to protect the pigment, so this is a deliberate tripod-and-patience subject requiring a fast lens of f/1.8 or wider and a high-ISO-capable camera body rather than any additional lighting beyond a small continuous LED panel if the custodian allows it. Because the chamber is roofed, it can be photographed year round regardless of season, though ambient light reaching the entrance is strongest between 11:00 and 14:00, which is the recommended window. INAH charges about 85 MXN (approx USD 5) for nationals and residents and about 155 MXN (approx USD 9) for foreign visitors, and the site custodian unlocks the frieze chamber on request up until the 17:00 closing time, so a visit should not be left until the last few minutes. The site receives few visitors given its remote location near Conhuas on Federal Highway 186, so there is generally no wait for chamber access, though a tripod set up inside the confined space should be positioned carefully to avoid blocking the narrow walkway for other visitors or the custodian.
