Fuerte de San Miguel and the Bay Panorama

Fuerte de San Miguel occupies a hilltop above the coast road southwest of the historic centre, and its seaward rampart provides the widest elevated panorama of Campeche bay and the walled city skyline available in the area. The eighteenth-century moat, drawbridge and cannon line offer strong graphic foreground subjects that lead the eye toward the water, while the fort now houses the Museo Arqueologico Maya, including jade funerary masks recovered from Calakmul, in dim interior galleries where flash is prohibited. The bay panorama is best photographed from 16:00 to 18:30, when side light rakes across the ramparts and warms the cannon and stonework before the museum closes at 17:00; a polariser deepens the sky and cuts haze over the water. November through March offers the clearest air for the panorama, while the humid rainy season from June to September often leaves the bay hazy by afternoon. INAH opens the fort Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00, charging about 80 MXN (approx USD 5) for Mexican nationals and residents and about 145 MXN (approx USD 9) for foreign visitors, with free entry for nationals and residents on Sundays; a video permit costs an additional 63 MXN (approx USD 4). The site is rarely crowded outside weekend mornings, so tripod use on the open ramparts is generally unproblematic, though tripods are not permitted inside the museum galleries.
