Hotel Francis Drake

Hotel Francis Drake takes its name from the English corsairs who raided the port of Campeche repeatedly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the sieges that eventually prompted the Spanish crown to ring the city with the walls and baluartes that survive today. The hotel stands at Calle 12 No. 207, between Calle 63 and Calle 65, in the southern part of the walled city of San Francisco de Campeche, Mexico, two to three blocks from the Plaza de la Independencia and within a five-minute walk of the malecon and the Baluarte de San Carlos. The building is conventional rather than heritage-listed, and the appeal is reliability rather than character: 24 air-conditioned rooms across Standard, Superior, Junior Suite, and Master Suite categories, most with tiled floors, dark wood furniture, private bathrooms, desks, and televisions, and several with small balconies over the street. A restaurant and bar operate on the ground floor, reception is staffed 24 hours, and parking is available, an unusual convenience for an address inside the walls where most streets are narrow and one-way. That combination makes the hotel a frequent choice for travellers arriving late by ADO bus from Merida, Villahermosa, or Palenque, and for business visitors to the state capital who want a central base with a car space. Rates generally fall between MXN 1,100 and MXN 1,700 per night, placing the property in the middle of the walled-city market, above the plain budget hotels and well below the restored haciendas and boutiques. The immediate surroundings are quieter than Calle 59 but still within a short walk of the main concentration of restaurants, and the Puerta de Tierra sound-and-light show, the cathedral, and the seafront promenade are all reachable on foot in under ten minutes. Service is unfussy and practical, with staff who arrange taxis, airport transfers, and day trips to the Edzna archaeological site about an hour inland.
