Playa La Gringa, Bahia de los Angeles

Playa La Gringa is a remote, pale crescent of sand at the north end of Bahia de los Angeles, a bay on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja California backed by desert mountains and facing a scatter of offshore islands. The beach sits about 13 kilometres north of the small fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles, reached by a graded dirt road that a normal passenger car can usually manage in dry conditions, though a higher-clearance vehicle is a safer choice after rain. There are effectively no services at the beach itself -- no restaurants, no shops, no potable water -- so visitors need to bring everything they need, including fuel, water and food, from the village before heading out. Camping directly on the sand is the traditional way to use the beach, with visitors setting up for one or several nights under open desert sky, and the water is notably warm and glassy at dawn before any wind picks up. The bay's isolation and the surrounding desert and island scenery give the beach a strong sense of remoteness rarely found on Baja's more developed Pacific coast. Bahia de los Angeles is also one of the more reliable places in the world to see whale sharks close to shore, and boat trips run from the village during the July-to-October season when the filter-feeding sharks gather in the bay, making La Gringa a natural add-on stop before or after a whale-shark excursion. Outside that season, the beach is used mainly for fishing, quiet camping and stargazing, with very few other visitors on most days. The cooler months from October through April are the most comfortable overall, avoiding the intense summer desert heat, while July through October is the specific window for whale sharks in the bay.
