Estero Beach

Estero Beach lies about 20 minutes south of Ensenada beside a tidal estuary, and its sheltered position makes it the most reliable family beach on Baja California's Pacific coast. The bay is shallow and protected from the open ocean swell, so the water stays notably calmer and warmer than most beaches nearby; at high tide it forms a flat, gentle swimming area suited to small children, while low tide exposes broad sand flats that are ideal for walking, shell collecting and watching shorebirds feeding along the estuary edge. A long-established resort sits directly on the beach, and day visitors can access the sand through the resort for a small fee, which also brings access to a restaurant, kayak and paddleboard rental, and horse riding along the shore. The estuary itself supports a range of coastal birdlife, adding a quieter, more natural dimension to what is otherwise a fairly developed beach. Amenities are more complete here than at most other Baja beaches outside Rosarito: clean toilets, ample parking, food on site, and equipment rental for time on the calm water. The beach is signposted directly off Highway 1 south of Ensenada, making it an easy half-day or full-day trip from the city, and its calm water and resort infrastructure make it a common choice for families staying in Ensenada for several days. Unlike the surf-focused beaches to the north, Estero Beach is built around calm-water activities -- swimming, paddling and walking the sand flats -- rather than waves. The best conditions for swimming and water sports run from May through October, when the estuary water is warmest and calmest.
