Las Coloradas Pink Lakes

Las Coloradas is a cluster of salt lakes near the fishing village of Río Lagartos on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, approximately 2.5 hours from Valladolid and 3 hours from Tulum. The vivid bubble-gum pink and magenta color of the water is produced by a combination of factors: extremely high salt concentrations, halophilic (salt-loving) algae and bacteria, and brine shrimp that thrive in the hyper-saline conditions. The same biology that produces pink flamingo coloration operates here — flamingos in the nearby Río Lagartos biosphere reserve consume brine shrimp and algae from similar environments. The visual effect is most saturated in morning light before 10 AM and in late afternoon from 4 to 6 PM, when the low angle of the sun eliminates glare and the color contrast between the pink water and white salt edges is most dramatic. Swimming and entering the water is no longer permitted to protect the microbial ecosystems, and boats are prohibited on the lakes themselves. Viewing areas allow unobstructed photography from the lakeside paths. The surrounding landscape of salt flats, palm groves, and fishing village infrastructure creates compositional context unavailable at more generic tropical photo spots.
