Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox (pronounced "hol-bosh" from the Mayan for "black hole") is a 42-kilometer-long barrier island off the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, separated from the mainland by the shallow Yalahau Lagoon. The island has no paved roads and private cars are banned; golf carts, bicycles, and walking are the only means of getting around. The beach along the northern coast stretches for miles without significant development for most of its length — pale sand, shallow warm Gulf of Mexico water, and a distinctly unhurried atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the developed Riviera Maya to the south. During June through September, whale sharks gather in the waters north of Holbox to feed on plankton blooms, and licensed tour operators take small boats out for snorkeling alongside the largest fish in the ocean — an experience available at scale in very few places on Earth. Outside whale shark season, the same nutrient-rich waters attract manta rays, sea turtles, and flamingos in the adjacent Yalahau Lagoon. Punta Mosquito at the eastern tip of the island is a major flamingo concentration area accessible only by golf cart or bicycle from the town. Bioluminescent plankton lights the waters at night during certain seasons, creating a glowing effect for swimmers in the warm shallows. The town center of Holbox has a modest but growing tourist infrastructure — palapa-roofed hotels, seafood restaurants serving local lobster pizza (a Holbox specialty), and a small beachfront square. The ferry from Chiquila on the mainland takes 30 minutes, with buses connecting Chiquila to Cancun and Merida.
