Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route begins about 55 kilometers southeast of Toyama City at Tateyama Station and continues across the Northern Japan Alps to Murodo and Kurobe Dam via a fixed sequence of cable car, bus, ropeway, and trolley connections. The Toyama Chihou Railway Main Line runs from Dentetsu-Toyama Station to Tateyama Station in about 1 hour (¥1,270/$8), after which the Tateyama Cablecar climbs to Bijodaira in 7 minutes (¥1,090/$6.90), a bus continues to Murodo in about 50 minutes (¥3,000/$18.90), and further ropeway and cablecar legs connect toward Kurobe Dam; a same-day round trip between Tateyama and Kurobe Dam costs roughly ¥16,000 ($100.60) in combined fares. Murodo, at 2,450 meters, is the route's highest point and the base for viewing the Yuki-no-Otani Snow Wall, where plowed snow corridors reach up to 20 meters high in mid-April through June; the same plateau offers alpine hiking toward Mikurigaike Pond in summer and vivid foliage in October. Kurobe Dam, Japan's tallest dam at 186 meters, has an observation deck reached by a short walk from the dam-side station, with a dramatic water release visible on scheduled days in summer. Because the alpine route runs in one direction along a single sequence of transport modes, a full crossing requires committing to an early departure from Toyama and typically finishes by returning the same way in the afternoon; connections to Murodo or Kurobe Dam should be booked online in peak season, particularly around the Snow Wall opening in mid-April and the autumn foliage weeks in October. Travelers with less time can visit only the Tateyama Station area without riding the full route, at a round-trip rail fare of ¥1,270 ($8). The full route operates mid-April to November 30 and closes entirely outside that window.
