Amaharashi Coast

Amaharashi Coast lies on the border of Takaoka City and Himi, about 25 kilometers northwest of Toyama City and reachable in 45 to 55 minutes by train (Ainokaze Toyama Railway to Takaoka Station, then a transfer to the JR Himi Line to Amaharashi Station, ¥760/$4.80 total) or roughly 30 minutes by rental car via the Noetsu Expressway. The coast is known for its view across Toyama Bay to the snow-capped Tateyama mountain range, framed by the pine-covered Amaharashi rock and its small Kojima Shrine just offshore; on clear winter days the peaks appear to rise directly out of the sea, a combination that has made this one of Japan's most photographed coastal viewpoints. The visit centers on Roadside Station Amaharashi, which has free parking, a lookout deck, and local shops selling Himi kamaboko fish cake and seasonal produce. A morning arrival suits the coastal walk along the promenade toward Kojima Shrine, while photographers aiming for the clearest mountain views often come in winter when the air is driest, ideally in the hour after sunrise. In summer, July through August, the shoreline draws swimmers and the walking path is more comfortable in early morning or evening. Lunch can be taken at the roadside station or in nearby Himi, a short local-train ride away, where fresh seafood donburi is widely available. The site works well combined with Himi's fish market and glass art studios as a single day trip, since both are on the same JR Himi Line. Because the mountain view depends on clear weather, checking a same-day forecast before departing from Toyama is worthwhile, particularly in winter when the Tateyama Range is otherwise hidden by cloud.
