Takaoka — Zuiryuji Temple, Great Buddha & Kanayamachi

Takaoka is a former castle town on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway line, 17 kilometers west of Toyama City and reachable in about 20 minutes by local train from Toyama Station (¥360/$2.30 one-way); a rental car covers the same distance in roughly 25 minutes with parking available near the main sights. The city's centerpiece is Zuiryuji Temple, a National Treasure Zen temple built in 1663 by the second lord of the Kaga domain, notable for its symmetrical Sotoshu layout, sanmon gate, and hondo hall connected by covered corridors. A short walk north of the station stands the Takaoka Great Buddha, a 15.85-meter bronze statue cast by the city's ironworkers and ranked among Japan's three great Buddhas. East of the temple lies the Kanayamachi ironware district, a preserved street of Edo-period foundry houses where casting workshops still produce the copperware and bronze bells for which Takaoka has been known since the early 1600s. A typical day starts at Zuiryuji Temple in the morning, when the grounds are quiet and the light suits photography of the sanmon gate, then continues to the Great Buddha and finishes in the afternoon browsing Kanayamachi's craft shops and casting demonstrations. Lunch options cluster near Takaoka Station and Kanayamachi, including small soba and donburi counters serving Toyama Bay seafood. The trip suits any season; spring brings cherry blossoms along the Zuiryuji approach, while winter offers quieter temple visits. Arriving by mid-morning leaves enough time to cover all three sights on foot before the last convenient train back to Toyama in the early evening.
