Shimao Beach

Shimao Beach sits on the Himi coast in western Toyama Prefecture, on the stretch of shoreline that curves toward the Noto Peninsula. The beach is fine white sand backed by a line of green pines, and it is officially ranked among Japan's Top 100 bathing beaches for its water clarity and shallow, gently sloping entry. The bay here is more sheltered than the open coast further west, giving calmer water with light surf that suits families and casual swimmers rather than surfers. The vibe is low-key and local: an adjacent campsite draws overnight visitors through the summer, and traditional dragnet (jibiki-ami) fishing demonstrations run in season, letting visitors help haul in the nets alongside local fishermen. Toyama Bay and the distant Tateyama mountain range are visible from the shore on clear days, adding a scenic backdrop distinct from the flatter Noto coastline just beyond. Amenities are limited compared with the region's larger beaches — there are no permanent lifeguard towers or beachfront restaurants, and visitors typically rely on the campsite facilities or bring their own supplies, though basic restrooms serve the campsite and beach area. Reaching Shimao Beach takes more effort than the Toyama City-area beaches: it requires the Ainokaze Toyama Railway to Takaoka, a transfer to the JR Himi Line to Himi Station, and then a taxi or rental car for the final stretch, making a private vehicle the more practical option for most visitors.
