Namerikawa Coast (Wave Park Namerikawa)

Namerikawa Coast, centered on Wave Park Namerikawa at Nakagawara in Namerikawa City, sits on the eastern side of Toyama Bay roughly 18 km northeast of Toyama City. The shoreline here is rocky and pebbled rather than sandy, with open exposure to the bay and enough wave action that the coast functions as a viewing and walking destination rather than a swimming beach. The complex built around the shore, Roadside Station Wave Park Namerikawa, houses the Hotaruika (Firefly Squid) Museum, dedicated to the bioluminescent squid that spawn in Toyama Bay each spring, alongside Thalassopia, a wellness facility using pumped deep-sea water for baths and spa treatments. The atmosphere is more attraction-and-museum than beach-resort: visitors come primarily for the firefly squid displays, the deep-sea-water baths, and mountain-and-bay views rather than to sunbathe or swim. On-site amenities include parking, restrooms, and restaurants at the roadside station, making it a comfortable stop for families and day-trippers even outside the swimming season. The prime viewing period is March through May, when firefly squid gather offshore and can sometimes be seen washing up after nighttime tides, drawing visitors well before the summer beach season begins elsewhere in the prefecture. Access is easy by train: the Ainokaze Toyama Railway runs from Toyama Station to Namerikawa Station in about 20 minutes, followed by a short walk or taxi ride to the coastal facility.
