Rakkyo Chaya

Rakkyo Chaya is a small specialty shop and tasting counter near the entrance to the Tottori Sand Dunes, dedicated entirely to rakkyo, the pickled shallot grown in the sandy dune soil that is one of Tottori's most distinctive regional crops. The counter sells the classic sweet-vinegar pickled rakkyo by the jar for travelers to take home, alongside two more playful preparations made for eating on the spot: a rakkyo curry that folds the shallot into a mild Japanese curry rice, and a rakkyo soft-serve ice cream that pairs the vegetable's sharp, faintly sweet flavor with a creamy dessert base. There is no formal dining room; this is a walk-up tasting stand and small shop geared toward Sand Dunes visitors looking for a quick snack or a souvenir rather than a sit-down meal, and the atmosphere is casual and quick-moving, especially at midday when dune tour groups pass through. No alcohol or wine program is offered here, only soft drinks and the rakkyo products themselves. Reservations are not applicable given the counter-service format, and there is rarely a wait outside of peak tour-bus hours. Prices are very low, from about $2 for a scoop of soft-serve to $8 for a jar of pickled rakkyo to take home, making it an easy, inexpensive add-on for anyone already visiting the dunes.
