Shishikui Beach

Shishikui Beach sits on Tokushima Prefecture's Pacific coast in Kaiyo Town, part of the rugged Shishikui Cape shoreline about 75 km south of Tokushima City. The beach has fine white sand backed by pine windbreaks, and the water is noted for its clarity, a pale turquoise close to shore that deepens to blue further out, clean enough that Shishikui has held Blue Flag certification, the only beach in Tokushima with the designation. The bay is moderately sheltered by headlands on either side, giving a crescent shape that breaks the open Pacific swell into manageable waves, which is part of why the beach doubles as one of Japan's best-known surf towns; even so, groundswell from typhoons passing offshore can push surf up quickly in late summer and autumn. The main swimming stretch runs several hundred metres and is wide at low tide, narrowing at high water. Along the shore is a mix of family swimmers near the lifeguard-patrolled central section in July and August, and a more dedicated surf crowd at either end where board rentals and surf schools operate out of small shopfronts near the station. Amenities include showers, changing rooms, coin lockers, and a handful of beachside cafes and surf shops selling drinks and light meals; there is no large-scale food court, so options are casual. Parking is available in gravel lots behind the dunes, and during the summer lifeguard season is complimentary, though space fills quickly on weekends. The beach is a 10-minute walk from JR Shishikui Station on the JR Mugi Line, about two hours by train from Tokushima City, making a car the more practical option for a day trip despite the direct rail access. Around Shishikui, the coastline continues into rocky capes and small coves used for snorkeling and diving, and the town has a handful of guesthouses geared toward surfers staying multiple nights. Outside the July–August lifeguard season, the beach is quieter and swimming is at visitors' own risk, though surfing continues year-round.
