Mugi Beach

Mugi Beach sits in Mugi Town on Tokushima Prefecture's southern coast, about 65 km south of Tokushima City, tucked into a quiet cove framed by rocky headlands. The sand is coarser than the open beaches further along the coast, mixed with patches of pebble near the rock outcrops, and the water is notably clear thanks to the sheltering headlands that keep the cove calmer than the exposed breaks at nearby Kaifu and Shishikui. The nearshore reef supports snorkeling, with visibility good enough on calm days to see small reef fish and rock formations close to shore. A small fishing port sits immediately adjacent to the beach, giving the area a working coastal-village character rather than a resort feel, with fishing boats moored within view of swimmers. The cove shape and headland shelter mean Mugi Beach sees less surf and fewer crowds than the surf-focused beaches to the south, making it a quieter option for swimming and snorkeling rather than wave-riding. Amenities are limited: there are no dedicated beach facilities beyond what the small fishing town offers nearby, so visitors typically bring their own gear, food, and drinks, or pick up supplies from small shops in Mugi before heading to the sand. JR Mugi Station is a five-minute walk from the beach, one of the shortest station-to-sand walks along the JR Mugi Line, making it an easy stop for train travelers exploring the southern coast. Because the cove is compact, it can feel crowded on the busiest summer weekends despite its low profile, but on weekdays and outside peak season it is typically one of the quieter beaches in the area, appealing to visitors looking for a low-key alternative to the surf towns further south.
