Kaifu Beach

Kaifu Beach lies at the mouth of the Kaifu River in Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, about 70 km south of Tokushima City, and is regarded as one of Japan's premier surf breaks. The sand is coarse and pale gold, and the water is generally clear, though visibility drops near the river mouth where freshwater mixes with the Pacific. The beach faces open ocean with minimal headland shelter, so it receives consistent swell, and the river mouth creates a sandbar-shaped break that produces long, rideable waves favored by competitive surfers; Kaifu has hosted national surfing contests. Wave size and power make the main break unsuitable for casual swimmers; families and beginners typically use the calmer water inside the river mouth instead, where the current is gentler. There are no large resort-style amenities: a handful of surf shops and board-rental operations cluster near Kaifu Station, and simple showers are available, but food options are limited to a few small shops rather than a beachfront strip. The beach has an unmanicured, working-surf-town feel rather than a polished resort atmosphere. Kaifu Station, the southern terminus of the JR Mugi Line, sits within walking distance, making the beach reachable by train, though most surfers arrive by car with boards racked outside the small shops. Parking is informal, in gravel areas near the river mouth and station, and can be tight during major swell events or competitions. The surrounding area is otherwise quiet, with fishing boats moored along the river and low hills rising just inland. Because the swell is exposed to the open Pacific, autumn typhoon season from September through October often produces the largest and most consistent waves, drawing surfers from across Shikoku and beyond, while summer offers smaller, friendlier conditions for those still learning.
